Many people forget the city of Verona when they head over to northern Italy. They visit Venice and Milan, but what a mistake to miss out on Verona. It is easily accessible by train from both cities and Austria and Switzerland. Here are just 5 reasons why you should visit Verona if you are passing through northern Italy.
1) The Amphi Theatre
The Roman amphitheater called the Arena is right in the heart of Verona. It was home to the gladiator’s spectacles and is still standing today, hosting different shows throughout the warmer months. It is well worth a walk around the arena during the day (there is no entrance at night – except to watch a show). It is not for those who fear heights or those unable to climb stairs. It is open every day of the year but times vary on Mondays and during the opera season.
2) Walk around Piazza Bra
This is a beautiful piazza right in the heart of Verona where the Arena is located. There are many restaurants to sample the local pizza and pasta for a reasonable price. There are also several ice cream outlets around the square. During the day, have your photo taken with a Roman warrior outside the Amphi theatre and then walk down Via Mazzini, the main shopping street.
3) Teatro Romano
Just across the other side of the river Adige is the Teatro Roman which dates from the 1st century BC. There are regular shows at the theatre and many people bring their snacks and drinks to the events.
4) Juliette’s House
The home of Juliette from William Shakespeare’s Love Story is still standing and has been restored to enable visitors to take a tour around the house. You can go out on the famous balcony where Juliette and Romeo first met. For 7 euros you can take a tour of the house and also visit Juliette’s tomb which is located a few minutes walk away.
5) Via Mazzini
Via Mazzini is the main shopping street of Verona where you will find all the major high street shops such as Zara as well as the higher-end scale, Benetto and Svoroski. It can get very busy at night, so it is best to go in the morning or late afternoon.
Verona is just a short train ride from Venice. If you are staying in one of the Venice apartments, hop on the train, and in 1 hour and 10 minutes, you can discover another city.
There are many apartments to rent when visiting Italy. The question is where you want to stay. In the off-peak season, it is best to rent one of the apartments in Venice and then in the summertime, look for one closer to the coast.
