The total area consists of an Ecuadorian province, a national park, and a biological marine reserve. Spanish is the dominant language on the islands and 23,000 people live in the islands.
Geologically the islands are well-known for their huge number of endemic species. The biodiversity of these islands was studied by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. His explanation and collections contributed to the initiation of Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection.
